ZISMIWU Bags 531pc Salary Increase

A newly elected Zimbabwe Sugar Milling Industry Workers’ Union (ZISMIWU) executive led by Samuel Mubango has won a 531% salary increase in a development that has won it accolades from its members.

ZISMIWU is one of the biggest trade unions in the country, representing more than 10 000 workers at Tongaat Hullet in Chiredzi.

The development gives Mubango’s executive which was elected in August this year an upper hand over a faction of workers that is trying to overturn the election results in the Labour Court.

Sitiriki Mudzoro and nine others made the Chamber application on September 8 2021, to stop the swearing in of Mubango’s executive. Faster Gono is the secretary general appointed by Mubango to run the affairs of ZISMIWU.

ZISMIWU has over the years lost millions of US$ to corrupt leadership and look up to the administration of Gono to bring in a breath of fresh air. Several mega projects for which hundreds of thousands of dollars were drawn from the union’s bank accounts at the turn of the century have all been still born.

Mudzoro argued in his application that an executive elected on July 13, 2019 which wanted to return Admore Hwarare as the secretary general of the Union is the legitimate one and should lead the organisation.

Mudzoro is represented by Tito Manzvire of Zimbodza and Associates.

In response, Mubango’s executive which is represented by Rodgers Matsikidze of Matsikidze Attorneys described the urgent chamber application as flawed and hopeless. Technically the application is outside the law and therefore improperly before the courts, said Matsikidze in opposing papers. MasvingoMirror
