ZUJ Suspends National Congress

By Chipo Chabarwa

The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) has temporarily suspended its upcoming special National Congress citing compliance with government’s latest Covid-19 restrictions which banned all gatherings except for funerals.

A maximum of 30 people is allowed at funerals.

ZUJ president Michael Chideme announced the latest development in a statement.

“Due to the current Covid-19 national lockdown measures, specifically relating to the banning of gatherings, the Zimbabwe Union of journalists (ZUJ) has deferred the holding of its 2021 Special Congress, scheduled for this Saturday, 3rd of July 2021, in Harare to a yet-to-be-announced date,” he said.

Chideme stated that the holding of the Congress is dependent on the easing of the current lockdown measures and the revised dates of the congress would be communicated a week before the holding of the event.

Given that the country remains under lockdown ZUJ is willing to explore other options that are not against WHO regulations as a way forward.

“The union also retains the right to explore other options if the COVID-19 lockdown measures remain untenable,” Chideme said.  Nhau/Indaba
