Bindura Puts Condoms In Forests, Mountains

Health players in Mashonaland Central who deal with family planning and prevention of HIV/AIDS have established more condom accessing points in Bindura.

While the norm has been that condoms were only available in night clubs, bars, workplaces, youth friendly corners and hospitals – they can now be accessed from designated points in mountains and forests.

A team from Nhau/Indaba went into Manhenga and Chiveso mountains over the weekend to verify the claims where indeed it was noticed that accessing points have been established.

The condoms, however, are mostly for males.

Speaking to Chiedza Mujati, a behavior change facilitator, after the survey, she said the distribution of condoms and establishment of accessing points in mountains and forests will curb new HIV/AIDS incidences and unwanted pregnancies as well as sexually transmitted diseases.

She said it has been established that in Manhenga, couples are using the mountain as their sex haven and the demand for condoms is high.

Percival Kushure, a Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council marketing and publicity officer said his organization has to make sure that condoms are always available.

Development Aid from People to People through its Hope Project, is one of the organisations that are distributing the condoms in Manhenga.

Speaking through its outreach officer for the area Stencilia Jasi, the organisation revealed that it is targeting to distribute 170 665 condoms throughout Bindura district by yearend whilst every month they are targeting to churn out 13 336 condoms in the two areas. Nhau/Indaba
