Gold Panners Fined Z$400 000 Each


Two illegal gold panners have appeared at the Bindura magistrates’ court facing allegations of possessing 12kgs of gold ore.

Magistrate Ethel Chichera sentenced them each to 30 days in prison or alternatively pay an admission of guilt fine of Z$400 000 each.

Representing the State, Vincent Marunya said the accused Obvious Nyekete (26) and Chipo Mabhiza (24), all of Bindura – on January 24 were carrying 5x25kgs of gold ore in a Mazda vehicle from an unknown mine along Matepatepa Road when police going to attend to a case of attempted murder in the Matepatepa community stopped them.

They told police they were the owners of the ore but failed to produce their ore removal permit leading to their arrest and appearance in court Thursday. Nhau/Indaba
