Former Warriors captain Khama Billiat has announced his return to international football, overturning his previous decision to retire.
Billiat, who had stepped away from the Zimbabwe national team in November 2021, has expressed his desire to represent the Warriors once more as they prepare for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Billiat, who recently rejoined local club Yadah after a decade of stardom in South Africa, made the announcement through a heartfelt statement reflecting his deep connection to both the sport and his country.
In his statement, Billiat described this season as one of the best phases of his football career. “I have played on grand stages, but nothing beats expressing myself in front of my people,” he said. The 34-year-old winger highlighted that every match he plays motivates him to excel for both his team and the countless fans who support football.
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) confirmed Billiat’s return via a statement on Wednesday. “The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) is thrilled to announce the return of Khama Billiat to the Warriors squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Kenya and Cameroon, slated for September,” the statement read. “Following fruitful discussions between Khama Billiat and Head Coach Michael Nees, the dynamic forward has been officially added to the national team squad, which was initially announced on Monday.”
Billiat’s international career has been marked by numerous achievements. He made his debut for Zimbabwe in a 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Mali and quickly established himself as a key player. His performances in the 2017 AFCON and the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where he was appointed captain, are particularly noteworthy. However, following his last match against Ethiopia in the World Cup qualifiers, Billiat decided to retire from international duty.
In his statement, Billiat spoke of feeling an unfinished chapter with the Zimbabwe national team. “I have RECONSIDERED my decision to retire and would love to REPRESENT my country one more time,” he said, expressing his commitment to work hard and contribute positively to the team’s success.
Billiat’s return is expected to significantly strengthen the Warriors’ squad as they embark on their AFCON qualifiers. His experience and skill will be invaluable assets as Zimbabwe aims to make a mark in the continental competition. His recent performances in the local league have demonstrated that he remains in peak condition and capable of making a substantial impact both domestically and internationally.
As Billiat looks forward to rejoining the Warriors, he has reiterated his love for his country and his readiness to serve if given the chance. “I love my country and stand ready to serve if afforded a chance,” he stated. His dedication and passion for the sport continue to resonate with fans, who are excited about the prospect of seeing him don the national jersey once again. Nhau/Indaba
