Mbare’s Dama Freed Following Arrest Over Drugs

Mbare’s alleged drug kingpin, Tinashe Chanachimwe popularly known as Dama, has been granted ZW$50 000 bail following his arrest yesterday.

Dama appeared at Mbare Magistrates Court Thursday, where he was further ordered to report once every fortnight at Matapi police station as part of his bail conditions.

He was dragged to court following a raid by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) at his suspected base, Block 14 Matapi Flats, on February 9 this year.

Since then, he was on the run after a police blitzkreig dubbed ‘No to drugs and dangerous substances’ heated up targeting drug dealers throughout the country.

According to the ZRP, they recovered 26 satchets of dagga and one plant of mbanje measuring 1,7 metres at the notorious base during the raid.

Due to his alleged dealings, Dama earned himself the name Mbare’s ‘El Chapo’, a name derived from former Mexican drug lord, Joaquin Archivaldo Guzman Loera, known by various aliases, including “El Chapo” and “El Rapido”.

He was notorious for leading the Sinaloa Cartel, a Mexican organised crime syndicate.

In 2019, El Chapo was sentenced to life imprisonment plus 30 years to run consecutive to the life sentence for being a principal leader of a continuing criminal enterprise.

So far, police have arrested over 2 000 suspects for drug dealing and security has been tightened at the country’s entry ports to curb smuggling of drugs and illicit substances into the country. Nhau/Indaba
