MDC members living in fear

MDC Alliance senior members in Bulawayo are living in fear of abductions and torture by state security agents, this publication can reveal.

Swithern Chirowodza, MDC Alliance Bulawayo spokesperson said he is still no longer staying at his home as he fears for his life.

“It’s not just me but most senior officials. We are scared of what is happening and we no longer live at our homes. We fear that people wearing balaclavas will storm our homes and knock down the doors and abduct us,” said Chirowodza.

“We are afraid of getting Dzamarised. We are very scared, “he added.

Chirowodza further said some senior members in the province were now living in safe houses.

“I cannot give you names because of security reasons but some are staying at safe houses. Some move from houses to houses. This is how dire the situation is, he said.

The MDC spokesperson went on to say that the spat of abductions and torture of opposition members was evidence that Zanu PF has sold out on the liberation struggle.

“It is an antithesis of the liberation struggle and Zanu PF has not lived up to the values and ethos of the liberation struggle,” Chirowodza said.

In recent weeks there has been a spat of kidnappings and torture of opposition and civic society activists by suspected state security agents.

However, the government has dismissed out of hand the allegations, insisting that the abductions are fake and meant to tarnish the image of the country.
